Osmanthus (Gui Hua) is the national flower of China. It is grown throughout Southern China. The flowering season is in the middle of Autumn. If you travel in South China during this time, you’ll enjoy an environment that is filled with the charming and champagne-like fragrance of the beautiful Osmanthus flower. Chinese people love the Osmanthus flower. The Osmanthus bush is planted and commonly grown in home gardens, along roadsides, parks, gardens and mountains for not only it’s fragrance and beauty, but it is also widely used in many food and beverages.
Our Osmanthus Oolong is a popular tea blend combining the rich fragrance of Osmanthus flower and the fresh floral taste of Four Seasons Oolong tea.
The Osmanthus flower we use is harvested near the famous city of Guilin, which means Osmanthus City in Chinese. Besides the Osmanthus flower, Guilin is also well known for its exceptional scenery and is a very popular tourist city in China. The Osmanthus flower blossoming and harvesting in Guilin coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival and lasts for around two weeks. There are a several cultivars of Osmanthus. The main one used is Jin Gui (Golden Osmanthus) which has the strongest fragrance and a beautiful golden yellow color.
Similar to the Jasmine tea scenting process, the fresh Osmanthus flower is blended with the Oolong tea, causing the tea to absorb the fragrance from the Osmanthus. Once this process is completed – sometimes several times, the used, fresh Osmanthus flower is screened out. Then, later dred Osmanthus flowers will be added to the scented tea to ensure a lingering fragrance, and it also adds to the pleasant appearance of the tea.
