The late Autumn/ Fall Harvest – commonly referred to as Winter Harvest in Taiwan, begins first with the tea gardens in the highest elevation regions. This is contrary to the Spring harvest which begins with the lower elevation tea gardens.

Taiwan has some of the highest tea gardens in the world with Fu Shou Shan and Da Yu Ling teas being grown at an elevation of 2,300 – 2,600m (7,546 – 8,530ft).

Taiwan treasures its premium hand-picked, High Mountain Oolongs (Gao Shan Cha) and they pay premium prices for it locally. The distinctive aromas and flavors are much more present in higher elevation teas and this is indicative in the prices people are willing to pay.The outstandingly complex floral flavors and lingering sweet aftertastes that I first experienced with Taiwan High Mountain Oolong teas is what began my love affair with tea – and Taiwan teas in particular. The unique tastes and aromas of the teas, along with the experience of enjoying local tea customs, truly is unforgettable.

It is said that the harsh geographical conditions of the extreme High Mountain Oolongs also cause the tea to be extra rich in antioxidants and polyphenols, as well as vitamins and minerals.

High Mountain teas are usually very lightly oxidized (around 10-15% only) and with minimal roasting. Some people refer to them as Green Oolongs The tea color is usually a light golden yellow.

Zi Chun has a good range of Winter Harvested High Mountain Oolong teas available now – and will have more over the next couple of weeks. The quality of the 2019 Winter Harvest teas – especially those from the higher elevation regions, is very good, and in some cases, better than the 2019 Spring harvest, which was hindered by exceptionally heavy rains around time of the harvesting.
