Yunnan Black Teas exceptionally good quality this season

zi-chun-darjeeling-assam-yunnan-teaIt may surprise you how close in proximity Yunnan, China is to the the Darjeeling and Assam tea growing regions of India. Each of these regions grow tea in high elevations – both Yunnan and Darjeeling have some tea growing areas over 2,000m/ 6,560 ft.The local people in these regions are also quite similar. Needless to say, the teas grown in each of these regions are world class. Probably the biggest difference are the tea trees themselves. Much of the tea harvested in Yunnan is picked from old native tea trees – some of them being 1000s of year old, whereas tea in India was first introduced in early 1800s.

Ancient Tea Trees growing on the banks of the Lancang (Mekong) River

This year has produced some exceptionally high quality teas from Yunnan. Unlike many other parts of China, Yunnan had plenty of rain during Spring and moderate temperatures making it very conducive for yielding a good tea leaf.

Our colleague travels to Yunlong County in North Eastern Yunnan each Spring to personally select the best value Yunnan (Dian Hong) teas for our customers. Some of the teas trees grow on the banks of the Mekong River. This massive river (called the Lancang River in China) originates in the Tibetan Plateau and travels 4,350 km (over 2,700 miles), running through six Asian countries before draining into the South China Sea via the Mekong Delta,
