Not many white teas are produced in Taiwan, and this is the only white tea we know of that is produced using this cultivar. It was made by our partners in Central Taiwan in their own factory and using leaves from their own organic Red Jade tea garden. This is a fully handmade tea. The tea leaves do not come in contact with any form of machinery. Similar to Chinese Shou Mei white tea, the young leaves are hand-picked and gently laid out to naturally wither, then hand-fluffed to stimulate a light oxidation and finally desiccated to lock-in their lush fragrance.
Hong Yu (Red Jade) is a unique tea strain (TRES18) that was recently developed by The Taiwan Tea Research and Extension Station in the hills surrounding Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County, Central Taiwan. The Research and Extension station was focusing on the development and production of other teas at the time and ended up creating one of the most truly unique teas in the world. Red Jade is a cross between an Assam strain from Burma and a local Taiwanese wild tea strain. It has become a popular premium black tea is now also being used to make a rare and unique white tea.
